#5. For those who step up
My parents split when I was in first grade. My mom met my step-dad, mark, when I was in second grade. We moved in with him by the time I was in 3rd we moved in to his house. He treated my siblings and I as his own since day 1. He even would watch Gilmore Girls with me and my sister every afternoon. After my mom died when I was 16, Mark didn’t make us go live with our biological dad.
He continued raising us as his own. He started out as my mom’s boyfriend and became my dad, my best friend, my go-to for advice. – Mark ended up working 3 jobs while having heart failure, asthma, and diabetes. He did everything he could to provide for my sister and I.
He passed away 6 days before I graduated college in 2016. It’s been a few years but I still have trouble on Father’s Day. He could have ditched us when our mom died and we didn’t have enough income. But he didn’t. He was there fighting to put food on the table. Happy Father’s Day for all of the fathers who fight for their children.

It was the day my grandmother passed away. I was on my way back from the hospital, numb and quiet, walking through the park just to avoid going home too soon.
I sat on a bench, head down, holding the hospital wristband I hadn’t had the heart to take off yet. A golden retriever—old, graying, and slow—trotted over and gently rested her head on my knee. Her owner, an older man, followed behind and said softly, “She only does that when someone needs it.”
I didn’t say a word. I just cried. Right there, in front of two strangers—one with kind eyes, the other with soft fur and a knowing look.
He didn’t ask me what was wrong. He just sat beside me in silence for a minute, then said, “The world gives us small mercies. Let them find you.”
I think about that moment every time I see a photo of a stranger doing something kind. It didn’t make the pain disappear. But it made me feel less alone. And sometimes, that’s everything.

In psychology, there’s a term called “affective resonance.” It refers to the emotional harmony we feel when we witness kindness or joy—even if we’re not directly involved.
That’s why watching a video of someone helping a lost dog or seeing a photo of reunited siblings makes us feel something deep. We don’t just observe—we connect. It’s built into our wiring.
These images speak directly to that part of us. Not as viewers, but as participants in the human experience.

There’s a common belief that wholesome = boring. But in today’s climate of constant bad news, being soft, kind, or joyful is an act of quiet rebellion.
Online communities like r/MadeMeSmile and r/BeAmazed are part of a bigger movement to reclaim joy as valid and powerful. Not performative, not sugarcoated—just real, healing moments.
So yes, we’re celebrating puppies, handwritten notes, and people being decent. Because those things aren’t silly. They’re necessary.

In other words, feeling something when you see these wholesome photos isn’t random. It’s your body responding to goodness. And the more you expose yourself to it, the better you feel—mentally and physically.

So if one picture made you feel something, pay it forward. That’s how goodness grows.
